Galway is the home of the wild native Oyster.
Annually on the last weekend of September, the city celebrates the Galway International Oyster & Seafood Festival, the world’s longest running Oyster Festival. This year will see the 63rd Festival Spring to life in the heart of Galway.

From 28th to 30th September, the Galway oyster festival programme of events will include; seafood trails, oyster hot spots, oyster opening (shucking) championships including the World Oyster Opening Championship - the equivalent if the Oyster ‘Olympics’ in the bivalve world, a Masquerade Mardi Gras style Gala Event along with family activities, live music and lots more.
Established in 1954 by the then General Manager of Hotel Meyrick, Brian Collins (Great Southern Hotel), the Galway International Oyster & Seafood Festival has welcomed over half a million visitors, consumed more than 3 million oysters – washed down with champagne and stout whilst listening to some of the best musicians in Ireland.
This year the Clarenbridge Oyster Festival has moved to a week long festival from Sunday 8th September - Sunday 15th and will feature family friendly events, oyster eating, a best dressed and great music. Clarenbridge is just 15 minutes drive from Hotel Meyick.
The very first Oyster Festival in Galway was the brain child of Brian Collins then General Manager of the Great Sourthern Hotel (now Hotel Meyrick) who wanted to showcase our wild native oysters to the world. He approached Paddy Burkes in Clarenbridge to see if they would host day time events with the evening Gala moving to the hotel in Galway city centre. Guinness were headline sponsors of the Galway Oyster Festival for 56 years and helped put this wonderful food treasure on the world map. We now have two wonderful Oyster Festivals to cater for all the oyster and seafood fans that descend on the city and look forward to welcoming you this year.
